The election of Joseph R. Biden as president of the United States has had profound implications not only for domestic US politics but also for US international partners abroad. Due to Donald Trump’s statements about NATO being obsolete and past alliances as unnecessary, one of Biden’s first tasks in Europe would be to repair this part of Trump’s legacy.
As Biden mentioned during the 2021 Munich Security Conference, all allies would like to see “the United States working closely with European Union partners and the capitals across the continent — from Rome to Riga — to meet the range of shared challenges we face”. This task might turn out to be more challenging than these first optimistic international promises, as European and US priorities are now different and not necessarily shared.
