Discussion on European Defence Policy on NATO’s Eastern Flank
On 21 January 2025, a public discussion on European defence policy on NATO’s eastern flank took place at the French Institute in Latvia. The event was organised by the French Institute and the French Embassy in Latvia in cooperation with LATO, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung in the Baltic states, and the German Embassy in Latvia.
The discussion featured Elie Tenenbaum (France), Kai-Olaf Lang (Germany), and Jānis Karlsbergs, Chairman of the Board of LATO, who analysed their countries’ defence policies and the strategic importance of NATO’s eastern flank in the context of European security. Experts focused on strengthening collective defence, regional cooperation, and security challenges along Europe’s eastern border.
The event fostered a multi-perspective expert dialogue on Europe’s ability to respond to security risks in a coordinated manner and to strengthen cooperation among allies, highlighting the central role of NATO’s eastern flank in Europe’s security architecture.
