Crisis Management Simulation IV

Following the success of the last three Crisis Management Simulations (CMS I, II, III), the Atlantic Treaty Association in cooperation with the NATO Public Diplomacy Division, Queen’s Centre for International Studies, and Mannheim University organise CMS IV, to be held in Kingston, ON Canada July 12-18th 2009. The scenario for the simulation will be the current state of affairs in Afghanistan.

This is a unique opportunity for young people to deepen their understanding of the important and dynamic relationship between international organization, state actors, regional actors, and local actors in a crisis situation. This simulation will make use of few standardized procedures – allowing for a natural and unobstructed process in which participants will analyze the diplomatic, military and economic aspects of the situation in Afghanistan.

The CMS IV will expose its participants to the art of negotiation in the context of the global security system. As such, aspects of strategy and political tactics will be essential in deciding the outcome of the scenario.

The 5 day event will include panel discussions, simulation and an excursion to Ottawa to Parliament Hill.

Latvian Transatlantic organisation is a national coordinator of the CMS IV.

In order to apply, Latvian students or young professionals have to submit a CV (including an indication of past experience, if any, with simulations) and a short (1 page) analysis of the situation in Afghanistan, and the challenges which this situation presents for NATO decision-makers. Applicants must send an email with all the documents addressed to Irina Ivaskina – irina@lato.lv. The deadline for the submission of the applications is May 11 (including). The results will be announced on May 13.

Organisers cover participant’s accommodation, meal expenses and up to 50% of the travel costs.
