From October 23 till October 26, 2007 in the framework of the project programme „Latvia – EU and NATO member state”, Latvian Transatlantic Organisation organised the visit of journalists from different regions of Ukraine.
The goal of the visit is to share Latvia’s experience of Euro-Atlantic integration and development of the democratic, legal and economic institutions, thus showing Latvia as an active new member of Euro-Atlantic community and improving the mutual interstate relations, as well as fostering development of secure and stable Neighbourhood region.
In the framework of this visit, on October 24 Ukrainian journalists visited Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Latvia and Ministry of Defence of Latvia and together with the Latvian officials discussed about the political and security aspects of the Euro-Atlantic integration. Afterwards journalists met the representatives of the EU Information agency and learned about the methods of society information about the EU issues and opportunities.
On October 25 journalists visited the National Armed Forces (NAF) military base in Ādaži, where they learned about the goals, tasks, development of the NAF as well the adaption to the NATO standards. Later journalists met their colleagues from the newspapers “Diena” and “Telegraf”.
The visit concluded on October 26 with the visit to the European Affairs Committee of Saeima where journalists discussed the guidelines of both states in the context of the EU.
This visit is planned as Latvia’s contribution to the strengthening security, stability and development of democratic values of the EU and NATO Eastern neighbourhood region. Similar programme of the visits LATO organises already since 2005 and has gained a broad acknowledgment from the visitor’s side and intensive mass media coverage both in Latvia and abroad, thus bringing positive publicity to Latvia.
LATO informs that from October 29 till November 1 our country will visit one more journalist delegation from Georgia.
