Rīga Conference 2007 “Europe at the Crossroads: Agenda from Rīga to Bucharest”

From 14-15 October, 2007 international think-tank conference Europe at the Crossroads: Agenda from Riga to Bucharest took place to continue and expand the discussions initiated during the first Riga Conference on the NATO Transformation and the NATO Riga Summit 2006.

It has been a year since the leaders of most powerful countries met in Riga in order to outline the future policy of NATO. We believe that now, approaching the NATO summit in Bucharest, it is time for a review as well as new initiatives for further improvement of security and stability in Europe.

This October the Rīga Conference encourages the leading international policy-makers and thinkers to gather in Riga to raise a discussion about the most pressing challenges for the NATO and EU member states. High-level participation is expected, including President of Estonia H.E. Toomas Henrik Ilves, EU Commissioner Mr. Andris Piebalgs, NATO Head of Policy Planning Dr. Jamie Shea, Minister of Defence of Latvia Mr. Atis Slakteris, Under-State Secretary for Bucharest NATO Summit Mr. Victor Micula and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark Mr. Uffe Ellemann-Jensen.

The conference concentrated on four main areas, including NATO’s European and Global Role, Frontiers and Values of European Project, Euroatlantic Policies towards New European Nations, and last but not least - European Energy Independence.

The Latvian Transatlantic Organization, Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and the Strategic Analysis Commission under the Auspices of the President of the Republic of Latvia with the support from the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Latvia and Soros Foundation - Latvia are jointly organizing this conference.
